JAKARTA - Former President of the United States (US) Donald Trump called the indictment because of his efforts to cancel the 2020 election, as a persecution of political opponents.

"This should not have happened in America. This is persecution against people who get a very large number of votes in the Republican preliminary elections, and outperform (President Joe) Biden. So if you can't beat him, then his persecution or his action," Trump said as quoted by ANTARA from Anadolu, Friday, August 4.

"We can't let this happen in America," he continued.

Trump appeared in a trial at Washington's federal court on Thursday. He faces four criminal charges over his alleged attempt to cancel his defeat in the 2020 elections.

To Judge Moxila Upadhyaya, Trump pleaded not guilty to the charges and asked to be released pending his next trial.

Upadhyaya himself has given prosecutors one week to make a brief report explaining when the trial will take place. Meanwhile, Trump's team was asked to give their timeline a week later.

Trump was charged with guilt by the federal jury in an investigation by the US Department of Justice for his attempts to cancel the results of the 2020 presidential election. He insisted that he declared himself innocent.

Trump's team of lawyers is expected to provide an exception that Trump's statement is protected by the right to free speech under the First Amendment to the US Constitution.
