Beware The Surge Of Homecomers, Puan: A Strategy To Break Down Congestion Is A Must

JAKARTA - DPR Speaker Puan Maharani reminded the government to anticipate a surge in travelers ahead of going on Eid al-Fitr 1444 H leave. The government, from central to regional, is obliged to prepare the best scenario for the convenience of travelers.

"This will be our first homecoming after PPKM. Therefore, this time homecoming will be packed with travelers returning to their hometowns," said Puan, Tuesday, April 18.

"So good cooperation is needed between the central and regional governments in breaking down traffic jams. There should not be a buildup of vehicles at several critical points," continued the first woman who served as Chair of the Indonesian Parliament.

To anticipate traffic congestion during Eid homecoming, Puan appealed to the central and local governments to work together to anticipate a surge in vehicles leaving the capital city. Such as preparing traffic engineering at several exit points from the capital.

"The annual homecoming agenda ahead of Eid al-Fitr is usually dominated by travelers who use private vehicles to go to their hometowns. The central and regional governments must have a strategy to break down traffic jams," Puan asked.

The former Coordinating Minister for PMK also asked the Government to prepare the most effective strategy for the convenience of travelers. Cross-agency cooperation, said Puan, is very much needed.

"All ministries and agencies, including the Ministry of Transportation and the National Police, must work together well to be able to maintain comfort and safety for travelers by preparing traffic engineering and supporting facilities at homecoming posts," she said.

Puan also asked the Regional Government (Pemda) to prepare efforts to unravel traffic jams when travelers start arriving in their hometowns. Including preparing the necessary facilities and amenities in tourist attractions.

"Regional governments should be able to facilitate travelers who use public transportation to go to their respective homes," appealed Puan.

"And ensure the readiness of facilities and officers at tourist attractions and other crowded places which are usually the destinations for people to travel on holidays," she added.

Furthermore, Puan reminded prospective travelers to take advantage of mass transportation such as trains, buses, or ships to anticipate traffic congestion on land routes. The use of mass transportation, according to Puan, can reduce congestion.

"Prospective travelers can take advantage of public transportation to anticipate a surge in vehicles during this year's homecoming moment. Moreover, several government agencies are holding a free homecoming program with mass transportation," said Bung Karno's granddaughter.

However, if using a private vehicle, Puan reminded prospective travelers to always prioritize safety when driving. Travelers are also asked to pay attention to information from the BMKG considering that unpredictable weather will be an obstacle for travelers.

"If you are forced to use a private vehicle, I remind you to always maintain safety. If you fall asleep while driving, rest immediately and don't force it. Always prioritize road safety," said Puan.

On the other hand, Puan asked the public to continue to be aware of the circulation of the COVID-19 virus during the Eid al-Fitr holiday. Especially now that there is an increase in cases of COVID-19.

"Tighten efforts to prevent a spike in COVID-19 cases. Make sure to always implement health protocols when staying in touch with family or when in crowded places," she said.
