PAPUA - Head of the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) Papua Province, Anthonius Ayorbaba, said that as many as seven correctional officers (Lapas) in Bumi Cenderawasih received disciplinary sanctions for neglecting their duties.

"We are trying to minimize violators of work discipline to officers in prison and if anyone is caught committing a violation, of course, they will be given sanctions ranging from light, moderate to severe disciplinary sanctions", said Anthonius when contacted, quoted from Antara, Sunday 9 October.

He said the sanctions were imposed to improve and educate the officers in the Integrated Service Unit (UPT) of Corrections throughout Papua. One of them is to be more disciplined in carrying out tasks.

"The seven prison officers received disciplinary sanctions where one of them received sanctions for committing violence against inmates", he said.

Anthonius explained that the other six officers who were at the Penitentiary were given sanctions for not being disciplined, such as extending their own leave and others.

"We have processed the prison officers who carried out violence against the inmates through the Office and Rank Advisory Board session and the result was that the person concerned was given disciplinary sanctions in the form of periodic salary delays", he said.

He added that this action was taken considering that there had been several cases of prisoners escaping from prison for that his party appealed to all employees to do their best.
