JAKARTA - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused the West on Tuesday of trying to derail negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, by stoking "hysteria" over alleged war crimes by Moscow forces.

Kyiv and the West say there is evidence, including pictures and witness testimony compiled by Reuters and other media organizations, that Russia committed war crimes in the city of Bucha, a suburb of Kyiv, Ukraine. Moscow denies the accusations, calling them a horrific fabrication.

Foreign Minister Lavrov said, without providing evidence, Moscow believed the accusations were to undermine the negotiation process, after what he described as progress when representatives of Ukraine and Russia met in Turkey last week.

"We tend to think the reason is the desire to find a pretext to break off the negotiations that are being carried out," he said in a video released by Russia's foreign ministry, cited from Reuters, April 6.

In a sign of the gap that remains between the two sides after nearly six weeks of war, Foreign Minister Lavrov said Moscow still insists on the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, as well as protection for Russian speakers there. However, Kyiv denies that this is a real problem.

Ukraine and Western governments say these demands, which were put forward by President Vladimir Putin at the start of the Russian invasion, are a false pretext for illegal attacks on the democratic country.

Foreign Minister Lavrov stressed, again without providing evidence, Ukraine had "tried to stop the negotiation process altogether", after Western media published allegations of war crimes.
