Jokowi Reveals 3 Big Challenges Of Low Carbon Energy Transition, Starting From Access To Research And Technology

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) revealed that three major challenges in energy transition efforts must get the attention of all parties. One of them is related to access to clean energy.

This was conveyed by Jokowi when he was the keynote speaker at the S20 High-Level Policy Webinar on Just Energy Transition on Thursday, March 17.

"I see that there are three big challenges in the energy transition that need our collective attention. First, it is related to access to clean energy", Jokowi said in the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube show, Thursday, March 17.

The former governor of DKI Jakarta said that not all of the world's citizens currently have access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy. Thus, all parties must encourage the availability of clean energy for all.

The next challenge that Jokowi mentioned is funding. He said the energy transition process would require a very large amount of funds, so it would require a new investment project.

"The energy transition requires new projects, which means that new investments are also needed because it requires exploring the right financing mechanism to create an economy, competitive prices, and not burden the community", he explained.

Lastly, Jokowi said, is about research and technology support in the energy transition. According to him, science is needed to make the transition.

Not only science but the availability of superior human resources (HR) is also needed in this effort.

"The role of science and technology is needed to produce new technologies that are more efficient and more competitive so that they can reduce costs and increase added value in new and renewable energy industrial products", he said.

"In addition, it is necessary to prepare various competencies and expertise from elementary to tertiary levels so that superior human resources are available to support the energy transition", added Jokowi.

Although many challenges will be faced in this transition effort, Jokowi believes that several opportunities will be created.

"I am optimistic that behind all these challenges there are several opportunities that are wide open, our ability to overcome the challenges of the energy transition will open up new opportunities and new jobs", he concluded.
