Indonesian Badminton Must Be Evaluated After Total Failure At The 2023 Asian Games
JAKARTA - The Indonesian badminton team failed completely at the 2023 Asian Games. None of the medals were brought back to the country.
This makes the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) in the spotlight. They are expected to evaluate and fix themselves after the failure in Hangzhou, China.
This was also conveyed by senior badminton coach Mulyo Handoyo. He reminded the importance of improving or evaluating management and coaching after the failure of the Indonesian badminton team to win medals at the 2022 Asian Games.
"Everything must be evaluated starting from management, coaching. This must all be evaluated because there are no medals at all," said Mulyo Handoyo, quoted from Antara, Saturday, October 7.
The Indonesian badminton team, which was previously targeted to donate three gold medals, experienced a total failure at the 2022 Asian Games.
For the first time in the history of the Asian Games, Indonesia failed to win a medal in badminton, following the absence of a single representative of the Red and White team to advance to the semifinals of the 2022 Asian Games individual event Hangzhou.
In fact, since it was first competed in the quadrennial championship event in 1962, it has always brought home medals and became the main pillar of the position of the Indonesian contingent in the standings for the medals in the Asian sports event.
Mulyo assessed that the management of the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) must conduct a firm evaluation, both management and coaching.
According to the former legendary badminton coach Taufik Hidayat, the failure of Indonesian representatives in bringing home medals at the 2022 Asian Games was a tough blow to Indonesia's sporting achievements, so it was necessary to make significant improvements in preparation and strategy for a very competitive Asian-level competition.
He said one of the important steps is to improve the development of young talents. Investment in the development of young athletes with high potential can help Indonesia compete better at the international level.
As far as I know, badminton during the Asian Games always gets a gold medal. So, everyone must introspect. This concerns the good name of Indonesia, the main thing is for the national interest, it must be prioritized," he said.

Mulyo Handoyo also said that the commitment to evaluate and learn from important failures is done, especially since Indonesia has the potential to achieve better results on the international sports stage.
"This needs a firm evaluation, especially since history does not get a medal. At least everyone must improve themselves, be it management, coaching," he said.
Mulyo added that careful planning is also needed in participating in the championship because it will be the foundation of success. This will help athletes prepare their best strategies, mental focus, and implementation to achieve their goals in the competition arena.
"Especially the Binpres (Achievement Development Midfield) is how to make the planning, the planning. Then the coach how to achieve the targets that must be achieved. This must be clear, if it is not clear, how can it be. If we pursue it without planning, it will be like this," said Mulyo Handoyo.
