Roberto Mancini Withdraws From The Italian National Team

JAKARTA - Roberto Mancini has surprisingly stepped down from the Italian national team's coaching position, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) said in an announcement on Sunday.

The FIGC said in a statement that it had "received a decision" Mancini to resign last night.

"Because of the important commitment and the team will undergo the Euro 2024 qualifiers against North Macedonia and Ukraine, the FIGC will announce the name of the new national coach in the next few days," added the FIGC quoted by Antara from AFP.

Mancini was appointed coach in May 2018 after Italy failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup while still being coached by Gian Piero Ventura.

The former Italian national team player was quite successful in coaching his country's team by winning the 2021 European Cup (Euro), but failed to bring Italy through to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Mancini's sudden resignation occurred without any warning.

Earlier this month, the 58-year-old was also given the responsibility to coach the Italian U-21 and U-20 national teams.

Italian media have speculated that Luciano Spalletti will be appointed as substitute coach. Spalletti is a coach who was able to end a 33-year wait for Napoli to win the Serie A title last season before leaving his post.
