Allegedly Harassing The Mexican National Team, Lionel Messi Gets 'Threats' From World Boxing Champion Canelo Alvarez
JAKARTA - Four-weight boxing world champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez threatened to punch Lionel Messi. The Argentina national team star was considered to have insulted Canelo's country by kicking the Mexico jersey in the locker room.
The video of Messi kicking the jersey was widely circulated on social media after Argentina recorded a 2-0 victory over Mexico in Qatar's 2022 World Cup preliminary Group C match, Sunday, November 27, early western Indonesian time.
This incident occurred when Messi and his friends were celebrating their victory in the locker room. La Pulga was then seen sitting for a moment to take off his shoes.
It was at that moment that the player belonging to Paris Saint-Germain appeared to kick a dark green Mexico jersey which happened to be lying on the floor and was right in front of the toe of his shoe.
“Did you see Messi cleaning the floor with our uniform and flag. He better pray to God that I don't find him,” Canelo wrote on his personal Twitter, as reported by Sportbible, Monday, November 28, 2022.
"As much as I respect Argentina, he should respect Mexico! I'm not talking about the country as a whole, only about Messi in terms of what he does," Canelo wrote in another tweet.
Canelo's tweet was considered excessive by some. With such an extraordinary career, it is considered impossible for Messi to kick the Mexico jersey on purpose as alleged.
Messi is considered to have only tried to take off his shoes on the sidelines of the ongoing excitement so he didn't pay attention to the jersey. La Pulga is considered accidental.
In the match against Mexico, Messi scored a beautiful goal and provided one assist. The victory opened up Argentina's hopes of qualifying for the next round.
Previously, Messi and his friends lost against Saudi Arabia in the first match. Argentina will have their last match against Poland, next Thursday.
