JAKARTA - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), through the Task Force Supporting Disaster Management team, is conducting surveys and mapping in the affected areas of Aceh and Sumatra disasters.
Through this mapping, BRIN wants to produce very accurate spatial data. This data will be used to make disaster management policies. These policies include the emergency response phase and post-disaster recovery.
Researcher at the BRIN Geological Disaster Research Center, Firman Prawiradisastra, said that the survey team deployed a total of six people. The team is equipped with two Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) units or drones carrying LiDAR sensors and high-resolution cameras.
"The team is planned to work for 14 days in the field to ensure that the data collected is complete and detailed," said Firman, quoted through the official BRIN website on Monday, December 15.
Firman added that this method allows BRIN to photograph the conditions of the affected areas comprehensively. Two UAV vehicles with LiDAR technology and cameras are very helpful in reaching areas that are difficult to access from land.
The BRIN survey team will move to a number of affected areas in North Sumatra. The focus of the region is North Tapanuli, Central Tapanuli, and South Tapanuli. These three areas were chosen because they experienced a significant impact of the disaster.
Data collected in this mapping will produce a map of the affected area with a wide area coverage and high resolution. This data will be used to estimate the level of damage in detail, including changes in the landscape and potential for further hazards.
"With detailed spatial data, mitigation plans can be prepared more accurately and effectively," said Firman. "Our hope is that this field data is not only used to respond to current disasters, but also serves as an important reference in reducing the risk of future disasters."
