Trump Announces TikTok Buyers In US, Deal Can Be Completed 30-45 Days

JAKARTA US President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced that the US and Chinese governments had reached an agreement regarding the future of the short video application TikTok. In the agreement, TikTok's assets in America will be transferred to US investor ownership, so that the popular app can still operate in Uncle Sam's country.

This deal became a bright spot after nearly a year of protracted talks between the world's two largest economies, which previously sparked trade tensions and global market concerns. However, Trump did not specify who TikTok buyers in the US or the final structure of ownership would be agreed upon.

According to CNBC, the deal is expected to close within 30 to 45 days. An old investor from ByteDance, the parent company TikTok from China, is said to remain involved with new investors from America.

However, this agreement still has the potential to require approval from the US Congress now controlled by the Republican Party. Previously, during the Joe Biden administration in 2024, Congress had passed a law requiring TikTok's divestment because of concerns that US user data could be accessed by the Chinese government for espionage purposes or propaganda operations.

The Trump administration has several times postponed enforcement of the law on political grounds. TikTok is said to have played an important role in political communication, even Trump claims the app helped him win last year's election. Trump's personal account on TikTok now has about 15 million followers, while the White House just launched an official account last month.

Previously, last spring there was a plan to separate US TikTok from becoming a new American-based company and the majority of its shares owned by US investors. However, the plan was delayed after China refused to approve following Trump's announcement of high tariffs for goods from China.
