Prevent Radicalization, Facebook Try Vitur Warning On Extremism

JAKARTA - Facebook Inc (FB.O), the world's largest social media network, has begun warning some users that they may have seen "extremist content" on its social media site. The statement came on Thursday, July 1.

A screenshot shared on Twitter shows a notification asking: "Are you worried that someone you know is becoming an extremist?" Then there's another one that warns users: "You may have been exposed to dangerous extremist content recently." Both include a link to "get support".

The world's largest social media network has long been under pressure from lawmakers and civil rights groups to fight extremism on its platforms. This includes the domestic US movement involved in the January 6 Capitol riots when groups supporting former President Donald Trump tried to stop the US Congress from authorizing Joe Biden's victory in the November election.

Facebook said a small test, which only exists on its main platform, is underway in the United States. This project serves as a pilot for a global approach to prevent radicalization at the site.

"This test is part of our larger work to assess how to provide resources and support to people on Facebook who may be involved in or exposed to extremist content, or may know someone who is at risk," a Facebook spokesperson said.

"We are partnering with NGOs and academic experts in this field and look forward to sharing more in the future," the source added.

Facebook said the effort was part of its commitment to the Christchurch Call to Action, a campaign involving major technology platforms to fight extremist and online violent content launched in the wake of the 2019 attacks in New Zealand that were broadcast live on Facebook.

Facebook said the tests identified users who may have been exposed to extremist content that violated the rules and users who were previously the subject of Facebook enforcement.

Facebook, which has tightened its rules against violence and hate groups in recent years, said it proactively removes some content and accounts that violate its rules before it is seen by users. However other content can be viewed before it is enforced.
