JAKARTA - After the official launch of the pre-order of Grand Theft Auto VI on June 25, Kaspersky saw cyber criminals quickly begin to exploit the euphoria as bait.

Scammers are taking advantage of the high demand to launch fraudulent schemes, ranging from fake pre-order pages to fake video tutorials, targeting users who want to get a copy of their game.

Kaspersky experts point out the main schemes used by attackers and offer guidance on how to recognize and avoid becoming a victim of fraud.

Fake Shop Early Booking

The scammers have created fake websites that offer users the option to pre-order the game. After clicking "Order now," users are asked to enter personal details and payment information. In the end, their bank accounts are drained and their personal data leaked.

Kaspersky experts have detected such fraudulent pages in various languages, which indicates that fraudsters are actively targeting players in different regions.

Fake Beta Access

In one such case, a suspicious website was identified offering a beta version of the game to download, under the guise of a leak or leak. To further strengthen credibility, comments posted alongside this content claimed that the download contained the original version of the game.

Once launched, the file can harm the user's device, potentially causing the theft of sensitive data, unauthorized access to personal accounts, or the installation of malware that operates silently in the background.

Virtual Wallet

Crypto asset users are also targeted through suspicious and low-reputation websites. In one case, a site was identified as promoting a token with a name that resembles the title of the game.

The page mimics the visual style of the game and uses its logo to create a strong visual association with the game. Such a website should be handled with extreme caution, as interacting with it can result in the loss of crypto assets.

"We strongly advise users to complete purchases exclusively through official platforms, and to avoid following links shared by unverified sources," said Kaspersky's Senior Web Content Analyst, Olga Altukhova.
