Minister Of Komdigi Supports AI Utilization By Developing Infrastructure And Data Centers

JAKARTA Artificial Intelligence (AI) shows positive trends, both global and local, in various sectors. Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) Meutya Hafid also said that AI is important for the country.

Even though the government is currently tasked with focusing on eradicating online gambling, Meutya explained that AI remains one of the important technologies for them. The reason is, AI is needed in all lines, starting from the government, business, banking, and others.

"Indonesia's commitment to prepare for artificial intelligence is one of our focuses. A few weeks earlier we focused on the PR of the President, namely online gambling, but in our opinion, artificial intelligence is also one of the important things," said Meutya at the AI for Indonesia event on Wednesday, December 4.

According to Meutya, AI development needs to be supported by strong infrastructure so that Komdigi will continue to develop the required communication infrastructure. Without strong infrastructure, data processing and AI training will be difficult.

"Infrastructure that includes high-speed computing, large data centers, and stable internet networks is our need to face an artificial intelligence era," said Meutya.

In the last five years, the government has built infrastructure at three different levels, namely backbone, middle mile, and last mile. At the backbone level, Komdigi, formerly known as Kominfo, has built a 12,229 kilometer Palapa Ring fiber optic cable network, both on land and in the sea.

At the middle mile level, the government has launched the Satria-1 satellite with a capacity of 150Gbps, while at the last mile level the government has built 1,667 Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) and provided internet access at 18,697 public service points.

Meutya also revealed that the government is preparing a national data center to support the One Data Indonesia program. Hopefully, this data center can support the use of AI technology.

"This service plays a very important role in the future, of course, in the use of AI technology based on data validity and continuity," explained Meutya. "We are also working with several global tech companies to realize AI-specific digital talents."
