JAKARTA The EU Commission has requested information from YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok on Wednesday, September 2, regarding the parameters used by their algorithm to recommend content to users, as well as their role in increasing systemic risk, including those related to the electoral process, mental health, and protection of minors.

The request was submitted under the Digital Service Act (DSA) and "also includes the steps the platform takes to reduce the potential influence of its recommendation system on the spread of illegal content, such as the promotion of illegal drugs and hate speech," according to a statement from the European Union Commission.

The European Union Commission also requested additional information from TikTok regarding the steps taken by the company to prevent bad actors from manipulating the app, as well as efforts to reduce risks related to elections and civilian discourse.

The technology company is required to provide the requested information no later than November 15. After receiving the information, the commission will decide on the next steps, which could include the imposition of fines.

Previously, the European Union had opened a process of non-compliance with DSA, requiring major tech companies to be more active in dealing with illegal and harmful content on their platforms. The process also includes recommendations provided by Meta's Facebook and Instagram, AliExpress, and TikTok.
