Microsoft Stops HoloLens 2 Headset Production

JAKARTA Microsoft has stopped producing HoloLens 2, a headset that combines augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies. Now, the company only sells the remaining devices on the market.

This bad news was conveyed directly by Microsoft to UploadVR. Although production has been stopped, support for the device will continue. Microsoft will provide regular updates for the next few years.

This update will be provided until December 31, 2027 to address critical security concerns and software setbacks. When entering 2028, Microsoft will immediately discontinue software support for the device.

The production period of HoloLens 2 is much longer than its first generation. The device was released at the end of November, but production was halted not long ago. However, the original HoloLens released in 2016 had stopped being produced two years later.

HoloLens 2 production was halted after Meta revealed a prototype of its transparent AR device known as Orion. This device is advanced technology in the form of smart glasses with a fairly large field of view.

It is not known for certain whether Microsoft will release the next generation of HoloLens. The reason is, rumors about the cancellation of HoloLens 3 have emerged since early 2022 and Microsoft are seen denying the news.

To Business Insider, Microsoft stated that, "HoloLens is going well." However, the future of HoloLens 3 is still unclear because the device has not been seen to date. Microsoft has never stated that the device failed to produce.
