BMKG: 111 Aftershocks Occurred After the NTT Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake

KUPANG - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Geophysical Station reported that as of 10.00 WITA, the number of aftershocks after the magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), had reached 111 times.

"The latest information as of 10.00 WITA has occurred a total of 111 times aftershocks," said the Head of the BMKG Geophysical Station Kupang Arief Tystama in Kupang, Saturday morning.

This was conveyed by him when holding a press conference in Kupang with the local government and other related institutions at the NTT Police Headquarters.

He said that although there were 111 aftershocks as of 10.00 WITA, the seismic activity was still continuing with the last magnitude of 3.8.

Even though the magnitude of the earthquake has started to decrease, he urged people in Flores to always be alert, because aftershocks are still occurring. Meanwhile, regarding the tsunami early warning, he said, it has now been lifted.

Previously, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a potential tsunami status in several coastal areas in NTT after an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 shook Mbay Village, Nagekeo Regency, Saturday at 05.58 WITA local time.

The epicenter occurred at coordinates 8.41 degrees south latitude and 121.39 degrees east longitude. Its location is around 30 kilometers offshore Mbay-Nagekeo with a depth of 15 kilometers

Until 07.03 WITA, BMKG issued a tsunami early warning 2. The warning covers the areas of NTT, South Sulawesi, West Nusa Tenggara and Southeast Sulawesi.

In NTT, the areas with the Alert status include northern Manggarai, northern Ngada, northern West Manggarai, northern Ende and northern Sikka.

Meanwhile, the South Sulawesi region that is in the Alert status is Selayar, Jeneponto and Bantaeng.
