JAKARTA - Synchron, a technology company developing a non-invasive brain-computer interface, is now getting closer to reality in enabling device controls like the Apple Vision Pro using mind. The company has reached a one-year milestone with no serious side effects on patients undergoing brain implants.
The brain-computer interface (BCI) is the latest revolutionary technology up for grabs in consumer markets. The first clinical trial for minimal invasive brain implants of Synchron begins in 2022. Over time, this technology has grown from the potential to control iPhone and iPad so far can be used to control Apple Vision Pro.
According to Synchron, six patients using BCI implants did not experience serious adverse events related to devices, such as death or an increase in permanent defects for one post-implant year. This means that the implanted device does not cause problems and shows consistent results in capturing brain signals related to motor intentions.
"This COMMAND study is a major medical milestone that confirms the security of the BCI Stentrode without any neurological problems during a 12-month study period," said Elad Levy, MD, MBA, FAANS, FACS, one of the study's main investigators. "This minimal invasive approach has the potential to widely open BCI technology for millions of patients with paralysis and other mobility challenges."

The COMMAND study is the first clinical trial approved by the FDA for permanent brain implants. In contrast to other brain implants requiring high risk invasive surgery, Synchron implants are installed through a jugullaris veins with a minimally invasive endovascular procedure.
The purpose of this implant is to enable people with severe brain injuries from stroke or paralysis to regain functional independence levels. Patients in this trial all experience chronic paralysis in the upper two arms that do not respond to therapy.
Once installed and functioning, brain-computer interfaces can interpret brain signals and turn them into actions such as moving the cursor or clicking. With this technology, devices such as iPhone, iPad, smart home appliances, or Apple Vision Pro can be controlled through mind.
