JAKARTA - Apple introduced the Journal app as part of iOS 17.2 last year. Although this app provides a basic function, many users feel that the app is still losing compared to other alternatives available on the App Store. However, a recent patent suggests that Apple Intelligence may bring significant changes to future Journal applications.

Apple has filed a new patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) which reveals various improvements being made for the Journal application. Illustration in the patent suggests that the app will gain in-depth integration with Apple Intelligence to provide smarter advice.

Currently, the Journal app has provided some basic suggestions for remembering moments based on photos, music to listen to, places to visit, and people to be contacted. However, the patent shows that Apple plans to take this suggestion to its next level using AI. For example, the system will more proactively ask users to record moments in the Journal application after completing physical training or taking some photos at the same location. In addition, Apple also plans to integrate Journal applications with calendar events and reminders.

This patent also shows a new timeline interface where users can see events on the same day as if they were in a chat, instead of using a card with a cover and small text.

With iOS 18, the Journal app did get some interesting improvements. However, the company hasn't announced integration with Apple Intelligence yet, perhaps because the current AI feature is only available in limited previews. Although integration with Apple Intelligence in the Journal app is highly anticipated, Apple's current focus may be better directed at expanding this app to the iPad and Mac first.
