JAKARTA - Meta Platforms apologized on Tuesday 6 August for the removal of content from Malaysian Prime Minister's Facebook and Instagram accounts, Anwar Ibrahim, related to the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh last week.

Malaysia previously asked for an explanation from Meta after a post expressing condolences for Haniyeh's death was removed.

"We apologize for the operational error that resulted in removing content from Prime Minister's Facebook and Instagram Pages, and the content has been restored with the right news label," a Meta spokesperson said.

Malaysia's Minister of Communications and members of the Prime Minister's Office met with representatives of Meta on Monday, August 5 to ask for an explanation.

"The Prime Minister's office sees Meta's actions as discriminatory, unfair, and a blatant emphasis on freedom of expression," the office said in a statement on Monday.

Meta previously also removed the same content from Turkish government officials on Instagram. The link sparked a reaction from the Turkish government to block Instagram in the country.
