Two Workers Exposed to Radiation Exposure, NSSC Investigates Samsung Factory in South Korea

JAKARTA – The technology company Samsung is being investigated by the South Korean Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC). This investigation was carried out after two Samsung employees were hospitalized.

NSSC explained that the two employees were treated on Monday, May 27 due to exposure to X-rays at the Samsung chip factory in Giheung. This exposure occurs because the machine being used blasts the material with X-rays.

As a result of this radiation exposure, the two workers' fingers showed abnormal symptoms even though the blood test results did not show any problems. However, the two employees will carry out further tests.

After the accident occurred, the company stopped using the machine. NSSC also plans to investigate the radiation exposure accident to find out the specific cause.

"The NSSC is conducting an investigation at Samsung's Giheung factory," the NSSC said. "(the company) has suspended use of the equipment for specific reasons it plans to confirm through the investigation process."

If the results of the investigation reveal that Samsung has violated safety laws, the NSSC will take further action. They did not explain what kind of action would be provided.

Meanwhile, Samsung confirmed to CNBC that employees experienced X-ray exposure accidentally. The company is committed to supporting employee care and cooperating with the authorities.
