JAKARTA - Microsoft announced plans to open its first regional data center in Thailand. This was done, as a step to increase the availability of cloud services. This news comes a day after Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced a $1.7 billion investment in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud facilities in Indonesia.

"This data center area will expand the availability of Microsoft's hyperscale cloud services," the company said in a statement.

"The data center in Thailand will not only provide Azure's full capabilities, but also the best world-class AI infrastructure," Nadella said at an event in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, referring to the company's cloud computing platform.

The Thai data center will also help the reliability of the company's levels, performance, and compliance with data and privacy residence standards, Microsoft added in a statement.

According to Thailand's Prime Minister, Sretta Thaivisin, this data center is in line with the country's goal of the white elephant to become the main foundation of the digital economy.

"Investasi Microsoft merupakan titik balik penting dalam pengembangan ekonomi digital Thailand, meningkatkan daya saing," tulis Sretta di media sosial. Ia juga menambahkan bahwa investasi ini akan mendorong pertumbuhan ekonomi.

Microsoft has pledged to train 2.5 million people in Southeast Asia in AI use by 2025.
