JAKARTA - In an effort to enhance Nigeria's digital initiative and global presence, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has recommended combining artificial intelligence (AI) into Nigeria's security framework to increase results.

The director-general of the agency, Kashifu Inuwa, discussed this in a closed-door meeting with the Commander of the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS), Alhaji AS Adeleke, represented by deputy commander of DE Egbeji.

Inuwa emphasized different methods used by the security and information technology sector (IT) in their duties. He stressed that the security sector and IT can work together to use technologies such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things (IoT) to improve the security sector.

Inuwa expressed the willingness of NITDA to form a meaningful partnership, highlighting that cooperation in the IT sector and security is in accordance with the NITDA Strategic Plan and Route (SRAP 2.0). This is mainly relevant to pillars that emphasize the development of strategic partnerships and collaborations.

In November 2023, NITDA advocated collaboration between NITDA, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and financial institutions. The agency emphasizes the use of developing technology, such as AI and data analytics, to deepen digital payments.

Exploring AI further, Inuwa highlighted that AI is a global driving force. He clarified misunderstandings and emphasized their role in making tasks easier, providing quick responses, and offering solutions.

Responding to the talks, NISS Commander Adeleke expressed interest in the institute to learn from the NITDA experience. Adeleke said that the goal of the NISS was to gain valuable insight into the executive summary of Bola President Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, with the aim of assisting in developing and implementing policies.

NITDA is advancing AI growth in Nigeria through initiatives such as the National Center for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) and the development of the National Artificial Intelligence Policy.

In October, the Nigerian government announced a grant of 5 million naira (Rp100.8 million) to 45 startups and AI-focused researchers. This initiative is part of a recently introduced Nigerian Artificial Intelligence Research Scheme, designed to facilitate the widespread use of AI to drive economic progress.
