JAKARTA - The European Commission announced on Thursday 18 Janauri that it had sent requests for information under the European Union Digital Services Act (DSA) to 17 technology companies deemed to be very large online platforms (VLOP) and search engines.

They contacted AliExpress, Amazon Store from Amazon, Apple AppStore, Booking.com, Facebook and Instagram from Meta, Google Search, Google Play, Google Maps, and Google Shopping from Alphabet, LinkedIn and Bing from Microsoft, Pinterest, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, and Zalando.

The European Union asked the companies to provide further information before February 9 about the steps they have taken to provide researchers with access to data that could be relevant to upcoming EU and national elections. The Commission also asked the VLOP to tackle illegal content and goods sold online.

The DSA came into effect in November last year and demanded very large online platforms and search engines to take more action to address illegal content and risks to public security.

The commission opened its first investigation under DSA in December 2023 against social media company X for allegedly violating its obligations.
