Shifting Samsung's Position, Apple Dominates the Mobile Phone Market with the Most Global Shipments

JAKARTA – Apple sales continue to decline in China, but not globally. The reason is, this large company managed to occupy the top position in the smartphone market with the most shipments.

International Data Corporation (IDC) showed their findings regarding the most smartphones shipped globally in 2023. Usually, the top position is occupied by Samsung, but this time Apple took that position.

From Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker data, Apple has shipped 234.6 million units or the equivalent of a 20.1 percent share of the market, while Samsung, which fell to second place, only sold 226.5 units globally and controls 19.4 percent of the market.

Meanwhile, research company Canalys shared similar results. By 2023, there will be more than 1.1 billion smartphone units sold globally. According to Canalys, the five companies that excel in the smartphone market are Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, and Transsion.

“Apple demonstrated resilience over the past two years thanks to strong demand in the high-end segment. "The expansion of the positioning of the iPhone 15 series shows the future direction of Apple's portfolio strategy," said Canalys Research Manager Amber Liu in an official statement.

This is the first time Apple has succeeded in occupying first position. Since 2010, Samsung has always been ranked first as the company with the most smartphone shipments worldwide.

The results of IDC and Canalys' findings are certainly good news for Apple. Currently, the company is experiencing difficulties because their sales are decreasing in China due to the ban on the use of foreign products in that country.

This prohibition is not made in written form and has no legal regulation. The government in that country only prohibits it verbally, but demands it. The impact of this ban can be seen from the price of the iPhone 15 which continues to decline, even reaching a 16 percent discount this year.
