JAKARTA - A hacktivist group that identified itself as 'gayrryrry hackers' managed to hack the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), a recent nuclear research laboratory. They then spread the names of the researchers online.

The leaked data includes full name, date of birth, email address, and physical address, which the hackers then uploaded to their Telegram channel. They also claim to have accessed 'one hundreds of thousands' of details for users, researchers, and residents.

Although no nuclear research data was leaked, security experts stated that it was 'worrying' that the names of top American nuclear researchers leaked online.

The Siegedsec group did not make demands for money, and security experts at SOCRadar suggested that hackers carry out their attacks 'for fun'. They also want to show that they may be 18-25 years old.

The group has previously leaked data from organizations such as NATO and Atlassian, and has publicly uploaded data, rather than trying to ask for ransom.

INL confirmed that they were victims of a cyberattack, in which a spokesman for Lori MacNamara said they were confirming the extent of the breach.

"This morning, the Idaho National Laboratory determined that they were targeted for cyberattacks, affecting servers supporting their Oracle HCM system, which supports their Human Resources app," MacNamara said. "INL has taken immediate action to protect employee data."

"INL has communicated with federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security's Cyber Security and Infrastructure Security Agency, to investigate the extent of the data affected in this incident," he said.

The Idaho National Laboratory has been involved in nuclear reactor research since 1949, and more than 50 reactors have been built at the site.

The 890 square mile complex absorbs up to 5,700 people, and is currently engaged in new nuclear reactor technology research.

SiegedSec is known for its vulgar jokes and has maintained the Telegram channel since spring 2022.

In Telegram's post, the group said: "Meow meow, we have successfully accessed the Idaho National Laboratory. Good data, we have accessed hundreds of thousands of user data, employees, and residents."

"We are willing to make an agreement with INL; if they research creating real catgirls, we will drop this post," they said.

The group uploaded screenshots of internal equipment used in the laboratory as evidence of hacking.

The group previously defamed websites and leaked information from several government websites with data leaked from at least 30 different organizations.

The group seems to have something to do with other hacktivist groups including GhostSec, and seems to be attacking targets for fun, not for profit, according to SOCRAdar.io.

The Idaho National Laboratory is one of 17 national laboratories that make up the US Department of Energy complex and is considered critical national infrastructure.

"Although the media surrounding this event stated that there is no nuclear secret, intellectual property, or R&D information accessed or stolen, which is fortunate, it remains very worrying that the staff who generate the intellectual property and participate in the most advanced Nuclear Energy research have their information leaked online," security expert Colin Little, a security engineer at Centripetal, told DarkReading.

"Now those who have political motivation and are eager to know the names and addresses of top nuclear Energy researchers in the US also have that data," he added.
