JAKARTA - Gita Gopinath, Deputy IMF's Deputy Managing Director, has warned of "substantial disruptions in the labor market" stemming from generative artificial intelligence. He also asked policymakers to immediately formulate rules to regulate the technology, as reported by the Financial Times on Monday, June 5.

"We need governments, institutions and policymakers to act immediately in all fields, both in terms of regulation and in preparation for possible substantial disturbances in the labor market," Gita Gopinath said in an interview with the FT, who was also quoted by Reuters.

He also recommended that the government strengthen the "social safety network" for workers affected by the adoption of artificial intelligence, while developing tax policies that do not provide incentives to companies that replace employees with machines.

Gopinath warned policymakers to be careful if any companies arise in an unshakable position in this new technology.

"You don't want to own giant companies with huge amount of data and computing power that have an unfair advantage," Gopinath told the newspaper.
