JAKARTA - Startup OpenAI on Tuesday, March 14 announced it would release a powerful artificial intelligence model called GPT-4, which could trigger human-like technology and increase competition between its backers Microsoft Corp and Alphabet Inc's Google.

OpenAI, which created the chatbot sensation ChatGPT, said in a blog post that its newest technology is "multimodal", meaning that images, as well as text, can trigger it to generate content.

The text input feature will be available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers and software developers, on a waiting list, while the image input capability is still a research preview.

The highly-anticipated launch shows how office workers may be turning to ever-increasing AI for more tasks, as well as how technology companies are locked in competition to win business from such advances.

Alphabet Inc.'s Google last Tuesday announced a "magic wand" for its collaboration software that can create nearly any document, days before Microsoft is set to showcase AI for its competitive Word password processing, likely powered by OpenAI. A Microsoft executive also said that GPT-4 helps strengthen its Bing search engine.

"OpenAI's latest technology is in some cases a major improvement over the previous version known as GPT-3.5," said OpenAI, in a blog post.

In a simulation of the bar exam required for US law school graduates prior to professional practice, the new model scored in the top 10% of test takers, compared with the older model which scored in the bottom 10%, OpenAI said.

“While the two versions may appear similar in casual conversation, the differences emerge when task complexity reaches a sufficient threshold,” said OpenAI, emphasizing that “GPT-4 is more reliable, creative, and able to handle much more nuanced instructions.”

OpenAI has announced the release of its latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-4, which is claimed to have superior capabilities compared to its predecessors. In an online demonstration by OpenAI President Greg Brockman, GPT-4 was able to create a website based on a simple hand-drawn image. Apart from that, GPT-4 can also help individuals in calculating their taxes.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called GPT-4 the best model in line with human values and intentions, even though it "still has flaws". According to the company, GPT-4 has a lower error rate, which is 82% less than its predecessor and has a higher factuality score of 40%. This makes it superior at overcoming inappropriate responses, known as "hallucinations", a challenge for many artificial intelligence programs.

According to Rishi Jalania, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets, Microsoft will benefit from adopting GPT-4. As well as integrating the latest OpenAI technologies into their products, Microsoft Azure will also be the main platform for OpenAI deployments, especially for companies monitoring their IT spending in these uncertain times.

"Every time an enterprise uses this technology, the workload is going through Microsoft Azure, and I think this comes at a very important time," said Jalania, quoted by Reuters.
