JAKARTA - Meta subsidiary WhatsApp was fined 5.5 million euros (IDR 90 billion) on Thursday by the Irish Data Privacy Commissioner (DPC) for additional violations of EU privacy laws.

The DPC, which acts as the EU's main privacy regulator for Meta, said WhatsApp should reassess how it uses personal data for the improvement of its service.

The ruling, as Reuters reported, follows a similar order issued this month to Meta's other major platforms, Facebook and Instagram, which stated Meta should reassess the legal basis for targeting ads through the use of personal data.

Previously the DPC fined WhatsApp 225 million euros (IDR 3.6 trillion) in September 2021 for violations that occurred during the same time period as the complaint handled on Thursday.

They have also fined Meta 1.3 billion euros (IDR 21.3 trillion) to date and have 10 other questions open for its services.
