JAKARTA - The new Disney Plus app is now available globally for Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5). Unlike previous versions, only PS4 apps running on newer consoles, this new software is designed natively for the PS5.

The main difference is that now Disney Plus supports video playback at 4K HDR resolution, while the previous app was limited to 1080p so far.

Users can download the PS5 Disney Plus app from the media section on the home screen. Those in Latin America can now download the Star Plus app too based on the PS5 native code.

“An important part of our global expansion strategy is to meet consumers wherever they are, which is why we are excited to enhance Disney Plus and Star Plus for PlayStation 5 users,” said Jerrell Jimerson, EVP of product and design for Disney streaming, cited from Digital Trends, Wednesday, October 5.

"The ability to support streaming 4K HDR video on the platform will also enhance the viewing experience for fans."

However, to stream Disney Plus in 4K HDR quality on PS5, users need a paid subscription to Disney Plus and an internet connection with speeds of at least 25Mbps to 35Mbps.

With 4K video quality, users can watch Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, Nat Geo, and more on PS5. Disney Plus had approximately 152.1 million subscribers worldwide as of July 2, 2022, with 44.5 million of them in the US and Canada.

This launch means Disney Plus is catching up with its streaming competitors, such as Netflix, Amazon, and HBO Max, which already offer 4K quality video playback on PS5 first.
