JAKARTA - The rapid growth in the number of TikTok users has made several competing applications compete to create the latest innovations to support their short video features. If Instagram wants to compete using Reels, then on the other hand YouTube has Shorts, which allows content creators to upload short videos there.

Today, YouTube is introducing a new capability that allows content creators to convert up to 60 seconds of long YouTube videos and turn them into Shorts.

With this new tool, YouTube hopes content creators will be more active to help build the Shorts library further.

Apart from converting from your long YouTube videos to Shorts, you can still record additional videos with the camera or upload videos from your gallery.

For the record, if you want to record or add a gallery video, you will have to press the back arrow once on the editing screen after you have selected your video segment.

Creators may be motivated to use this tool, as YouTube also reveals that Shorts created using VOD (video on demand) content will automatically link back to the original long video.

The tool is out now, creators on YouTube can try it out on iOS and Android mobile devices.

It's clear that YouTube is very ambitious to improve its Shorts and rival TikTok. Some time ago, YouTube gave creators a tool to be able to create clips and remix them for up to five seconds each video or Shorts.

This feature is already available to all users on iOS, and will be coming to Android users by the end of this year.
