Confirmed, Volkswagen To Start Production Of ID.4 All-Electric SUV In Chattanooga USA

JAKARTA - German automaker Volkswagen announced the start of production of its all-electric SUV for the ID.4 at its manufacturing facility in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The ID.4 production announcement means that the ID.4 is Volkswagen's first EV to be built and sold in the United States.

Launching from Electrek, ID.4 began production in 2020. With the promotion as an EV "for millions not millionaires" ID.4 successfully gained consumers from all over Europe, North America, and China.

Unfortunately, currently, customers in North America can only import cars from Germany, as Volkswagen does not manufacture EVs in the US.

According to a Volkswagen Group press release, the production of ID.4 in the US officially takes place in Chattanooga, Tennessee. When production begins, Volkswagen plans to reach an output of around 7,000 ID.4 per month by the end of this year, then will continue to increase it through 2023.

The components in the new ID.4 assembled by Volkswagen will be sourced mostly in North America, specifically, the United States.

The components include steel from Alabama and Ohio, interior parts from Indiana and South Carolina, and electronics from Kentucky and North Carolina. The EV battery itself will come from SK Innovation in Georgia.

Volkswagen also said that it currently employs more than 4,000 people in Chattanooga and is in the process of hiring more than 1,000 new production members this year to help meet high customer demand for ID.4.

It is known that the ID.4 will be powered by a 62 kWh battery, a decrease when compared to the currently offered ID.4 with an 82 kWh battery, which has an EPA range of 275 miles.

With a smaller battery option, this will also significantly reduce the price of the ID.4 which should be less than $42,000. There is no definite price for the latest version of this EV. But it is estimated to be priced at US$30,000 (IDR 449 million).
