JAKARTA – Alphabet Inc's Google announced on Wednesday, April 13 that it plans to invest approximately USD 9.5 billion (IDR 136 trillion) across US offices and data centers this year. This number is up from the previous only 7 billion US dollars (IDR 100.5 trillion) last year.

Google says the investment will create at least 12,000 full-time jobs by 2022 and focuses on data centers in several states including Nevada, Nebraska, and Virginia.

The company will open a new office in Atlanta this year, and expand its data center in Storey County, Nevada.

"It may seem counterintuitive to increase our investment in physical offices even as we embrace more flexibility in the way we work. But we believe it is more important than ever to invest in our campuses..." Google said in a statement, quoted by Reuters.

Google has been trying to bring its employees back into some of its offices in the United States, United Kingdom, and Asia Pacific by making it mandatory to work from the office for about three days a week, a move to end a policy that allowed employees to work remotely due to COVID-19 concerns.

Google will continue to invest in offices in the state of California and support affordable housing initiatives in the Bay Area as part of its $1 billion housing commitment.

Last year, Google helped provide $617 billion in economic activity for U.S. businesses, content creators, and developers, according to the 2021 economic impact report.
