JAKARTA – Entering 2022, the National Police's plan to use the Radio Frequency Identification or RFID system for the number plates of motorized vehicles in Indonesia will soon be carried out.

According to the Traffic Police Corps, using this RFID plate has many advantages that vehicle owners can take advantage of.

According to the Head of Sub-Directorate for STNK Corps of the Traffic Corps of the Police, Senior Commissioner of Police, Taslim Chairuddin, vehicle number plates with RFID technology have many functions. Because RFID is integrated with a computer-based system.

For example in the application of ETLE (CCTV-based ticketing system), touchless toll payments, electronic parking, to ERP (paid roads). RFID is also very difficult to counterfeit.

"RFID can be used for many things. ETLE, e-toll, e-parking, ERP, and others. Yes, the implementation is gradual," said Taslim.

Many countries have also started using RFID on vehicle number plates. This system is considered appropriate because it can be integrated with other systems such as parking payments, tolls, and monitoring driver violations. Then this technology will also make it difficult for perpetrators of number plate counterfeiters.

"In the future, so that the [new number plate] material is not easily counterfeited, the [plate] material already contains RFID," he said.

However, Taslim has not been able to confirm when the application of the RFID number plate will be implemented. Usually, the National Police will conduct a trial for several months before officially using it. However, this can be ascertained if the use of this technology becomes the medium-term target of the Traffic Police Corps.

"In the medium term, the TNKB will be implemented in white with black writing, equipped with RFID. In the long term, it will develop the use of the RAM database as the basis for police services, such as improving the ETLE concept, implementing eToll, ERP, and e-Parking," he said.

In addition to the use of RFID technology, the police will also change the basic color of civil vehicle number plates to white and black writing. This is done so that the number plates can be easily read by the ETLE camera system installed by the National Police at a number of points.
