JAKARTA - Italy has agreed to host the 2020 European Cup at Rome's Olympic Stadium with 25 percent of the stadium's capacity, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) said on Tuesday.

So far, fans have not been allowed into the football stadium, but European football body UEFA urged each Euro 2020 host country to allow a small audience to watch live European Cup 2020 matches.

"Italy and Rome are here! The government's agreement to allow spectators at the Euro 2020 in Rome is encouraging news that we will deliver to UEFA", FIGC President Gabriele Gravina was quoted as saying by AFP on Tuesday.

In a statement, Gravina said that he had received a letter from Deputy Sports Minister Valentina Vezzali mentioning that Italy ensured it could accommodate at least 25 percent of the Olympic stadium capacity.

Vezzali's spokesman also confirmed the news to AFP.

Euro 2020 was originally held last year but was rescheduled to June 11 to July 11, 2021.

Roma will host the opening match between Turkey and Italy, Switzerland and Wales, as well as the quarter-final arena.

The UEFA has warned that cities that cannot allow spectators into stadiums risk losing their status as hosts so that matches will be moved to other areas.

In March, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin had confirmed that he did not want a Euro 2020 match to be played in front of empty stands.
