Asnawi Mangkualam Absent, Shin Tae-yong Still Hasn't Determined The Indonesian National Team Captain

Asnawi Mangkualam Bahar had to miss the first meeting against Vietnam (doc. PSSI).

JAKARTA - Garuda Squad Coach, Shin Tae-yong, admitted that he still has not determined the player who will be the captain in the match of the Indonesian national team vs Vietnam. The coach will decide on the day of the match.

Previously, it was known that the main captain of the Indonesian national team was Asnawi Mangkualam. While the deputy captain is Jordi Amat. However, in the match 21 March 2024 at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, the two players were unable to appear due to card accumulation and injury.

This situation made Shin Tae-yong have to find a replacement. However, until D-1, the coach still could not make a choice.

"Regarding the captain of the Indonesian national team, you can see for yourself tomorrow on the field," said Shin Tae-yong during a press conference in Senayan, Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

"Yes, it is true that Asnawi Mangkualam is the leader of this team, but for the captain in tomorrow's match, we have not decided yet," said the coach.

On the same occasion, Shin Tae-yong appeared to be accompanied by Sandy Walsh as a player's representative. This raises the question of whether Walsh was chosen to be captain in tomorrow's match.

You see, usually players who accompany the coach at the press conference session can be appointed captain.

Regarding that question, Shin Tae-yong chose not to give much speculation. He asked to just wait for his decision ahead of the match along with the announcement of the line-up list.

"So, is Sandy Walsh the captain or not? We don't know yet, we'll see tomorrow on the pitch," concluded Shin Tae-yong.

The Indonesian national team will face Vietnam in the second round of the 2026 Asian Zone World Cup Qualification on March 21, 2024 at 20.30 WIB. Then, the Garuda Squad will visit Vietnam headquarters, My Dinh Stadium, on March 26, 2024.
