JAKARTA - The match between Brazil and Argentina in the Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers in the CONMEBOL zone has been officially cancelled. The decision was conveyed by the football associations of each country.

"The Brazil-Argentina match will not be played," the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and the Argentine Football Association (AFA) said in a joint statement.

"The AFA, CBF and FIFA have settled the dispute at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)," the statement continued.

The duel between the two countries was actually held last September. However, the match which took place in Sao Paulo was stopped when the game was running for seven minutes.

That's because Brazilian health officials actually stormed the field. They accused the Argentine team of violating the COVID-19 quarantine.

But with the certainty that the two countries qualified for the Qatar 2022 World Cup finals in November, Brazil and Argentina then pleaded with FIFA to cancel the match definitively.

The strong reason for the two countries not to continue the meeting was because they were worried it would adversely affect their World Cup preparations.

The two federations submitted an application to not continue the match to FIFA through an appeal. But this was rejected and FIFA decided that the game should be restarted and in May, while Brazil and Argentina must still pay fines worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The two federations then took the case to CAS.

As is known, Brazil qualified for the 2022 World Cup which was held in Qatar with the status of group winners. While Argentina won a ticket to Qatar after occupying the second position.
