JAKARTA - The total cost for last year's Tokyo Olympics has more than doubled from its original estimate in 2013 after a one-year delay as the COVID-19 pandemic pushed costs even further.

Organizers said Tuesday that the Olympics had cost 1.42 trillion yen, or about Rp. 155.08 trillion.

The Olympics cost twice the 734 billion yen that Tokyo Olympic organizers had predicted submitted to the International Olympic Committee in 2013, but less than the final budget announced before the Games in December 2020.

Despite losing revenue from ticket sales, organizers save money by simplifying events and avoiding the expense of welcoming millions of fans.

The organizing committee, which will be dissolved at the end of June, said the final costs of the Games were 200 billion yen lower than projected in the pre-Olympic budget in 2020 and 29 billion yen lower than their predicted final costs in December 2021.

"This is an attempt by everyone involved in this event to pass on the legacy of the Tokyo Olympics to the next generation", said Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee President Seiko Hashimoto, quoted by Antara from AFP.

Tokyo experienced a COVID-19 spike last year as the Olympics were due to take place, sparking fears the event could exacerbate the outbreak in Japan and possibly the world.

The city of Sapporo in northern Japan is bidding to host the Winter Olympics in 2030.

A March survey in Sapporo and the surrounding area showed that the majority of the community supported holding the event.
