JAKARTA - Euro 2020 champions Italy and 2021 Copa America winners Argentina will meet in a match titled Finalissima which will be held in London on June 1 next year.

The event was agreed upon by European football's confederation, UEFA and its Latin American counterpart, CONMEBOL, last September after both expressed strong opposition to FIFA's plans to host the biennial World Cup.

"Cooperation is a long tradition between UEFA and COMEBOL, as has been recorded in history through competitions such as the Artemio Franchi Trophy and the Intercontinental Cup," UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said in an official statement quoted by Reuters on Thursday.

"It is with great pride that we re-launch such a prestigious national level trophy as a presentation for football fans around the world," he continued.

Both Italy and Argentina both became champions of their respective continental competitions by defeating their opponents who were hosts.

Italy beat England in the final at Wembley, while Argentina beat Brazil at the Maracana to end 28-year title drought.

The two confederations also signed an extension of a memorandum of understanding that will run until 30 June 2028 and they will share offices in London from next year.
