JAKARTA - The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) has shared news regarding Indonesia's withdrawal from the 2022 World Championships which will be held in Spain.

The official announcement regarding Indonesia's withdrawal from the year-end peak tournament was distributed by PBSI on Wednesday, December 8 morning.

The Head of the Development and Achievement Division of PP PBSI, Rionny Mainaky, said the main reason was the spread of the Omicron variant virus in several parts of the world. Not wanting to take the risk, the federation and the players finally agreed to withdraw.

"The rapid spread of the Omicron virus resulting in uncertain changes in health protocols made us decide to withdraw from the 2021 World Championships," Rionny said in an official release received by VOI.

"We don't want to take risks. The safety and health of athletes are more important," he continued.

In fact, 16 representatives of Indonesia participated in this competition. They were supposed to leave on Tuesday night.

The 2021 World Championships itself is planned to be held in Huelva, Spain. Participated by more than 300 participants from various countries, the competition will take place from December 12-19, 2021.
