Hybrid Car Incentives Have Not Been Realized Yet, Minister Of Industry: We Are Still Reviewing

TANGERANG - The electrification trend is growing rapidly globally, including in Indonesia. Not only pure electric vehicles (EVs), but hybrid cars are currently on the rise because they have the ability to run with gasoline engines combined with electricity so that they save fuel and are low in emissions.

In addition, hybrid vehicles are considered the right step in bridging to complete electrification so as to smooth out steps to create carbon neutrality.

According to data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), sales of hybrid vehicles in June 2024 were 4,057 units, an increase of 0.07 percent compared to last May in wholesales.

Meanwhile, sales of hybrid vehicle wholesales in the first half of this year reached 24,770 units, an increase of 49 percent from last year. This raises the question of whether this type of vehicle needs incentives from the government like the previous EV.

Minister of Industry of Indonesia (Menperin) Agus Gumiwang, said that this regulation is being discussed internally along with other ministries so that all can be executed carefully.

"Every day we try to calculate and discuss the internal government, we will propose especially for hybrid to the relevant ministries, in this case the finance ministry," Agus said during a media interview at ICE BSD, Tangerang, Thursday, July 18.

In the first half of this year, sales of hybrid wholesaler vehicles were dominated by Japanese manufacturers such as Toyota, Honda, and Suzuki.

Toyota All-New Kijang Innova Zenix is still the best-selling hybrid car in the country with sales of 10,074 units, followed by 4,945 units of Suzuki XL7 Hybrid, and Ertiga Hybrdi up to 2,391 units.

The fourth position is occupied by Toyota Yaris Cross HEV with 2,077 units and Honda CR-V e:HEV completes the top five with 1,639 units.

For the lowest five positions, Toyota Alphard Hybrid ranks sixth with sales of 1,075 units, followed by two Lexus models, LM 350h (816 units) and RX 350h (476 units), followed by Wuling Almaz Hybrid totaling 319 units, and Toyota Vellfire Hybrid with 219 units.
