Antony Leaks Reasons For Mixing With Manchester United

JAKARTA - Antony said problems in his personal life hindered his ability to find the best performance at Manchester United and eventually led to his departure from Old Trafford.

The Brazilian winger struggled to meet his 100 million-price tag and joined Real Betis on loan in January 2025.

It ended Manchester's sad times as he was the center of allegations of harassment, both in England and Brazil.

He was given leave from Manchester United in September 2023 and returned a month later. Antony said the police investigation had a bad impact and affected his performance on the pitch.

"I think, apart from football life, my personal life is a lot annoying because of the things I experienced, the moments I went through there," he said.

"Like it or not, it really affects me. So, of course, I know the potential I have."

"Not without reason I went to the World Cup, not without reason I was sold to Manchester United at a high price and I know my value."

"People see the moment, but they don't see a bigger picture, what happens to make it happen."

"So, as I said, my feeling at Manchester United is that I have good moments, bad moments too."

"However, of course I can do more, I can do better," Antony said while remembering his time at Manchester United to Brazil's ESPN.

Antony joined Manchester United in August 2022 to reunite with his former manager at Ajax, Erik ten Hag.

He became a star under Ten Hag in Amsterdam, but struggled to gain the trust of the Dutchman at Old Trafford.

Despite failing to find a regular place in the Red Devils, Antony insists he doesn't blame Ten Hag.

"Erik Ten Hag is a coach that I am very grateful for. He helped me a lot in the Netherlands and England even though the opportunity didn't come to my liking."

"However, it was the coach's choice, I have no grudges or anything. On the other hand, I am very grateful for everything he has done to me, for all his talks as well."

"He is a coach who will definitely be in this story because he helped me a lot," said Antony.

After Ten Hag's dismissal in November 2024, his successor Ruben Amorim approved Antony's move to Betis after only appearing under his tenure a few times.

The forward is expected to be re-available for transfer in the summer as the Portuguese coach wants to overhaul his squad.

"I've only been working for a while with (Amorim), but he's a very good coach. A very smart coach."

"Manchester United is having a tough time right now, but he's a good coach."

"I have a good relationship with him, but I need a new challenge and I wish him all the best at the end of this season," said Antony.
