JAKARTA - The Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda) of Karawang Regency, West Java, said the number of people in the extreme poor category in the area reached 106,780 people.

Head of the Monitoring and Evaluation Financing Division of the Karawang Regency Bappeda Ani Muthia in Karawang, said that according to the report, the poverty rate in the area in 2020 reached 195,410 people or 8.26 percent of the total local population of 2.3 million.

He conveyed that of the poverty rate which reached 195,410 people, around 4.51 percent or 106,780 people were categorized as extreme poverty.

"According to BPS (Central Statistics Agency) data, as many as 106,780 people who are extreme poor are spread across a number of Karawang areas, not just 25 villages," he said, quoted from Antara, Wednesday, October 13.

In particular, the number of people categorized as extreme poor in the 25 villages is currently still in the validation process by referring to the Karawang Social Welfare Integrated Data (DTKS).

Ani said extreme poverty in Karawang is not only spread over 25 villages in five sub-districts. However, for this year to the next few years, the handling of extreme poverty is only focused on these 25 villages.

"Among the indicators of the poor category is the income of the residents of Rp. 11,000 per day," he said.

He said the handling of extreme poverty in Karawang will receive intervention from the central government, which means this year there will be cash assistance of Rp. 900 thousand for poor people in 25 villages in the area.

Furthermore, in the years ahead, the handling of extreme poverty from the center will continue to provide basic food assistance to community empowerment.

A total of 25 villages were targeted by the program to tackle extreme poverty, including Cemarajaya, Gebangjaya, Kedungjaya, Kedungjeruk, Kertarahayu (Cibuaya District) as well as Karyamulya, Kutaampel, Segaran, Segarjaya, and Telukbango (Batujaya District).

In addition, the villages of Kiara, Pasirjaya, Sukajaya, Sumurgede, and Tegalurung (Cilamaya Kulon District) as well as Kutagandok, Kutakarya, Kutamukti, Sampalan, and Sindangsari (Kutawaluya District).

The rest are spread over five villages in Pedes sub-district, namely Jatimulya, Karangjaya, Kertaraharja, Payungsari, and Randumulya.

According to data from the Karawang Social Service, as of December 2020, the number of DTKS in the area was 266,468 households or 281,570 families or 860,659 people.
