The Government Pursues Vaccination For The Elderly To Prevent A Spike In COVID-19 Christmas And New Year Holidays

JAKARTA - Ahead of the long holiday celebrations for Christmas and New Year at the end of this year, the government has begun to anticipate a surge in COVID-19 cases.

This is done to prevent the return of the spike in cases that usually occurs after a long holiday due to increased mobility.

Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, said the government would pursue vaccination coverage for the elderly to prevent an increase in the number of COVID-19 treatments in hospitals.

"To anticipate Christmas and New Year, the vaccination rate for the elderly needs to be continuously pursued, especially in agglomeration areas and centers of economic growth, so that, in the event of the next wave, mortality rates and hospitalizations can be suppressed", Luhut said at a press conference. virtual, Monday, October 11th.

Luhut continued, the pursuit of this vaccination was carried out by the direction of President Joko Widodo. Jokowi does not want the increase in mobility to become uncontrollable so that the spike in cases is repeated.

Currently, daily confirmed cases of COVID-19 are down 98.4 percent, and confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Java-Bali have decreased to 98.9 percent from the peak of cases on July 15.

In addition to daily cases that continue to improve, the number of daily deaths in Indonesia also continues to decline. On October 10, there were only 39 deaths for the National and 17 for the Java and Bali regions.

However, Luhut asked all people not to be careless about the improvement of the current pandemic condition in Indonesia.

"I certainly continue to invite all of us people not to be complacent with today's conditions and then celebrate with euphoria so that we forget about the bad conditions that may occur because of our negligence", he said.
