JAKARTA - The Sudanese military said it had expelled Ethiopian troops trying to invade the border area of the two countries.

Ethiopian troops have been forced to withdraw from the Umm Barakit area, the Sudanese military said in a statement but gave no further details.

Sudan's army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, told reporters that the incident occurred on Saturday, September 25.

Al-Burhan said the move showed that the Sudanese military was carrying out its duty to protect the country after the attempted coup in Khartoum last week.

The Ethiopian military spokesman, Colonel Getnet Adane, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tensions along the border between Sudan and Ethiopia have escalated since conflict broke out in Tigray, a region in northern Ethiopia, last year.

The conflict has displaced tens of thousands of people to southern Sudan.

Tensions are concentrated in the fertile agricultural area of al-Fashqa, where the border is disputed.
