MAKASSAR - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of South Sulawesi noted that Japan became the largest export destination country for a number of leading commodities from South Sulawesi in July 2021.

"Based on the largest destination country, Japan is the first. The transaction value for Japan reached 81.42 million US dollars," said Head of South Sulawesi BPS Suntono in Makassar, reported by Antara, Sunday, September 12.

Some of the commodities exported to Japan are nickel, marine products such as shrimp, fish and aquatic invertebrates, and spices, with the largest export being nickel.

Besides Japan, other export destination countries are China (China), Malaysia, Timor Leste, and Taiwan.

"In percentage terms for the five destination countries, the contribution was recorded at around 97.1 percent, while it was 2.99 percent more than the other export destination countries combined," he said.

Suntono detailed that nickel has always been the belle of South Sulawesi's exports and managed to donate US$77.23 million or around 72.17 percent of the total export value.

The value of nickel exports in the previous month was lower than July 2021, which was 63.01 million US dollars or there was a difference of 14.22 million US dollars.

Countries other than Japan such as China contributed US$17.87 million (16.7 percent); Malaysia with a value of 2.39 million US dollars (2.23 percent); Timor Leste with a value of 1.79 million US dollars (1.67 percent) and Taiwan with a value of 1.13 million (1.05 percent) of the total export value of South Sulawesi.

Other leading commodities, such as oily grains and medicinal plants, contributed US$9.99 million or around 9.33 percent.

Other commodities, namely salt, sulfur and lime contributed about 2.84 million US dollars or 2.65 percent; and iron and steel by contributing 2.59 million US dollars, equivalent to 2.42 percent.

He stated that of all export commodities, South Sulawesi still relies on nickel because its contribution is almost three-quarters of the export value.
