JAKARTA - The National Police has stated that it is ready to handle the debt problems of obligors and debtors of the Bank Indonesia Liquidity Assistance (BLBI). The settlement will be carried out by applicable regulations.

The statement was in response to the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, who had mentioned that he had gathered high-ranking institutions and law enforcement agencies.

"Of course, if there is a report, the National Police are ready to resolve this", said Head of Public Information Bureau of the Public Relations Division of the National Police, Brigadier General Rusdi Hartono to reporters, Thursday, August 26.

But Rusdi said that until now there has been no report on this matter. In addition, the BLBI team is also trying to solve the problem.

"Until now there has been no (there is a report). We'll just follow the progress because this is still a process by the BLBI team itself in solving it", said Rusdi.

Previously, Coordinating Minister Mahfud MD asked obligors and debtors of Bank Indonesia Liquidity Assistance (BLBI) to cooperate to fulfill the summons and immediately settle their debts to the state.

Mahfud said that if the obligor and debtor were not cooperative, they could be charged with corruption, even though the government is currently trying to resolve it by civil law.

"Please cooperate. We will be firm about this because we were given time by the state, by the President not long, given until December 2023", said Mahfud.

The former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court said that his party had also summoned the Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Firli Bahuri, Attorney General ST Burhanuddin, and National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo to ensnare obligors and debtors who are absent and do not want to pay their debts.

"If the debtors are absent, do not acknowledge the debt even though there is a clear document on the debt, it could be this case, even though we resolve it civilly, we can turn it into a criminal case. It could be corruption", he said.

"Because this is people's money. The people are in trouble now, they can't get anything and the debt is in the name of the state formally and then it is not paid. This is not allowed", added Mahfud.
