The UN Expresses Concerns About Afghan Women And Children Under Taliban

JAKARTA - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was concerned about the fate of women and children in Afghanistan. This concern is due to the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan after the Taliban fundamentalist group took control of the capital, Kabul.

"There continue to be reports of serious human rights violations and abuses in communities most affected by the fighting. Guterres is deeply concerned about the future of women and children, whose rights must be protected", said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, quoted by Reuters, Monday, August 16.

"All violations must stop. He calls on the Taliban and all others to ensure the rights and freedoms of all people are respected and protected", Dujarric said.

Previously, Guterres himself on Friday had asked the Taliban to stop their attacks. The appeal was raised to immediately reduce the conflict in Afghanistan. Moreover, the UN has about three thousand national staff and about three hundred international staff.

As a form of concern, the United Nations is willing to give space to all warring parties to make peace. Moreover, these efforts are made to uphold the human rights of women and children so that they do not become victims of the power struggle again.

"The United Nations remains determined to contribute to a peaceful settlement, promote the human rights of all Afghans, especially women and children, and provide life-saving humanitarian assistance and critical support to civilians in need", Dujarric added.

Previously, the Taliban had stepped up attacks on the Afghan government after the United States withdrew its troops. As a result, within a few days, the Taliban immediately took control of important cities in Afghanistan.
