JAKARTA - The Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah said it fired rockets into Israeli territory at Shebaa Farms Friday local time, adding to tensions over this week's reciprocal attacks.

In a statement Hezbollah said today's rocket attacks were in retaliation to Israeli air strikes last Thursday, which they said hit areas in southern Lebanon.

The Israeli military (IDF) said at least ten rockets were launched at Israel from southern Lebanon in this attack.

"In response to 10 rockets that were recently fired at Israel from Lebanon, we are currently attacking a rocket launch site in Lebanon," the IDF said in a statement, citing Reuters Friday June 6.

Most of the rockets released on Friday were intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome anti-aircraft defense system, the rest fell in open areas. There were no reports of damage or casualties.

This is the third time in a week that the two sides have exchanged attacks, threatening peace in the border region, after Israel and Lebanon fought a month-long war in 2006.

A Lebanese security source said the rockets this time were launched from the al-Arqoub area, near the Lebanese city of Shebaa. Meanwhile, Israel launched retaliatory strikes and air strikes earlier this week in response to rockets fired from Lebanon and no group has claimed responsibility.

Separately, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett immediately held an emergency meeting with senior officials at the Kirya military headquarters in Tel Aviv, including Defense Minister Benny Gantz, IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Aviv Kohavi and others, to discuss Israel's retaliation, citing The Jerusalem Post.

Meanwhile, the Kiryat Shmona Government announced to its people that the rocket shelter which opened after last Tuesday's attack, will remain open over the weekend, anticipating a Hezbollah attack, giving residents a sense of security.
