KENDARI - The Kendari City Government, the Environment and Forestry Service in collaboration with the Family Welfare Programme (PKK) Mobilization Team held a competition for picking up trash in the sea and planting trees. This activity is to commemorate World Environment Day (HLHS) 2021.

The tree planting activity was carried out in Talia Village. This activity was attended by the Kendari Regional Secretary Nahwa Umar, Kendari City PKK Chairperson Sri Lestari Sulkarnain, Kendari DLHK Head Nismawati. There are also dozens of environmental activists as well as students and teachers of Adiwiyata Schools in the area.

The competition for picking up and transporting garbage from the sea, was attended by 28 participants who are women from the Petoaha and Bungkutoko sub-districts.

The head of the Kendari City PKK TP, Sri Lestari Sulkarnain, explained that many things can be done to commemorate HLHS, such as planting trees, cleaning the home environment and sorting out waste.

"As a form of concern for the environment around us to maintain it, we want to bring awareness to residents, especially those around Petoaha to get used to taking care of the surrounding environment, maintaining its beauty, the trees are still there and the environment is clean," she said, as quoted by Antara, Thursday, June 10.

Kendari City Secretary, Bahwa Umar, said that the garbage collection competition was not just for picking up trash, but as a form of public awareness to always protect the environment from waste.

"Don't throw any trash, especially because we are on the edge of the sea, it's better if we collect garbage and dispose of it in a place that has been determined by the city government, because if it is really clean it can later become a tourist spot," he said.

Especially in the competition to transport garbage from the sea, the result was that hundreds of kilograms of garbage were successfully transported from the coast by the participants. Meanwhile, the winner was Ati Swanti after successfully transporting 37.4 kilograms of waste.
