JAKARTA - The management of the Syekh Yusuf Gowa Regional General Hospital (RSUD) responded to the death of a baby named Athar Ismail who was two months old while in the Emergency Room (IGD) on Saturday, June 12, which went viral on social media regarding alleged negligence and minimal services.
"Regarding the death of baby Athar, it has actually been handled in accordance with the SOP and handling in accordance with the case of his disease," said Head of the Service of Syekh Yusuf Hospital, Nur Wahyudi to reporters in Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi, quoted by Antara, Tuesday, June 16.
He explained that the victim initially entered the Emergency Room on Saturday (12/6) evening at 20.30 WITA in critical condition due to fever that did not go down for three days.
He was treated at the Barombong Health Center, then referred to the hospital.
At the Syekh Yusuf Hospital, the victim had received treatment, but his condition continued to decline and would be referred to another type A hospital in Makassar City.
But fate had other plans, before the baby was referred to, he was declared dead on Sunday (13/6) early morning at 03.00 WITA.
In the video. the victim's parents were hysterical hugging their dead child. The victim's family accused the hospital of negligence and poor service, including the slow referral process to a large hospital.
Meanwhile, the management of Syekh Yusuf Hospital denied the allegation that there was negligence by the medical staff in handling patients while in the emergency room.
According to Wahyudi, from the report, the baby's condition was indeed critical from the beginning.
"The patient's condition is severe, according to the presentation from our team of doctors and nurses. He came from home, in a fever on the fourth day, accompanied by severe shortness of breath, and a somewhat yellow condition on the whole body," he said.
He explained that since the beginning of medical treatment, the standard operating procedures (SOP) had been carried out, starting with the provision of respiratory assistance, fluid infusions and drugs through injections, according to the patient handling protocol.
"Even the medical team has been involved since the first minute they arrived at the emergency room. From the results of the examination, after assessing the victim's last condition, it was planned to be referred to another hospital with more adequate services. However, at the time of referral, he had died," he said.
Regarding the issue of referrals that are considered slow to be processed, he said that he had already carried out the system by providing a referral recommendation to contact three destination hospitals through the integrated referral system (Sisrute), to RSUP Wahidin Sudirohusodo, RS Islam Faisal and RSUD Labuang Baji.
"It was in a critical state. It is still in a state of instability, we are still stable, while the referral submission process is still ongoing at that time. Our task is to send, and the acceptance depends on the system in Sisrute, waiting for confirmation from the destination hospital.
"We don't have the authority (to speed up), because it is the responsibility of the receiving hospital. We don't know what factors make it slow to be accepted. When the receiving hospital asks for confirmation to be sent, the patient is already dead," he said again.
Regarding this incident, the Syekh Yusuf Hospital still insists that there was no negligence in this case, and carried out according to the handling standard. Because, everything is according to the medical handling procedures carried out by the medical team at the Emergency Room.
